What if you lose your job after you obtained a visa?
In most cases in order to qualify for an employment based immigrant visa you are going to have to have proof that you have been offered a job in the United States. This does raise the question of what happens if you lose that job after you have obtained the visa? In general the answer is that you will have to find another job.
In general if you lose your job after you have obtained your visa you are still able to move to the United States. A potential employer has to be able to show that they were prepared to hire you and that they were able to pay your wages at the time that the visa was issued. Therefore if the visa has already been issued you will still be able to travel to the United States. You will however have to be able to get another job so make sure that you are prepared for this.
In most cases once the visa is issued it will be good for six months. That means that you will have to be able to find a new job within the six months before the visa has expired. This may be a challenge since there is a pretty good chance that if your employer is laying people off other companies are doing the same thing. You have to find a job that is in the same field as the one that you were applying for a visa to do so you will not be able to meet the requirement by taking a lesser job.
Another thing to keep in mind if you lose your job is that you will not be eligible for things like unemployment insurance or welfare and you need to apply for a new job. That means that you are going to have to be able to support yourself without the income from your job. This can be a problem for a lot of immigrants due to the costs involved getting the visas and of moving to the US. You are going to have to seriously think about whether or not you are going to be able to support yourself while you are in the United States.
Clearly losing your job after you have qualified for a visa is not an ideal situation but it is still possible to stay in the US if this happens. It will definitely take some work on your part since you do have to be able to find a job that is similar to the one that you lost. One thing to keep in mind is that the United States is a big country, just because they are laying people off in one part of the country doesn't mean they are doing it in the rest of the country. You may have to move in order to find the job that you need to stay in the country.
